NB! Word’s spellchecker does not count as the use of AI! Please use it with all your written tasks. However, if you use any other spellchecking systems or language enhancers (e.g. Grammarly), Turnitin will report it as the use of AI.
While using AI might seem like a tempting option to do all your learning tasks, there are some restrictions that the students should consider:
1. Accuracy and Reliability: AI (e.g. ChatGPT, Copilot) is not an academic source. It might generate inaccurate or outdated information, and the answers it generates might not always be reliable. Therefore, students should verify the information provided by AI by using trusted sources.
2. Plagiarism: Relying too heavily on AI can lead to unintentional plagiarism. If the student directly copies text generated by ChatGPT/Copilot/other AI without proper citation, it could result in academic misconduct. It is crucial to use the generated content as a reference or starting point and then rephrase and integrate it into the essay in your own words.
3. Lack of Context Awareness: AI might not fully understand the specific context or requirements of the essay prompt. It could generate content that does not align with the assignment’s objectives, leading to irrelevant or off-topic sections.
4. Over-Reliance on Technology: While AI can be a valuable tool, it is important for students to develop their own critical thinking, research, and writing skills. Over-relying on technology e.g. for essay composition could hinder the development of these essential skills. This is the main reason why AI cannot be used in the written tasks of this course.
5. Inappropriate/biased Content: AI’s responses are generated based on the input it receives. While for example OpenAI has implemented safety measures to avoid generating inappropriate or biased content, there is still a possibility that the model might produce content that is not suitable for academic or professional settings.
How can AI then be used during the course? Here are some ideas on how to ensure your learning process while avoiding plagiarism. The most important thing is to remember that you are the master while AI is a tool. The final product should come from you, not from mindless technology.
