ICT Services Reminder – Small actions can have a huge impact
As part of Security Week, we want to remind you of a few everyday practices that have a significant impact on information security.
Lock your computer whenever you leave your workstation
Locking your computer is one of the most effective ways to protect information and reduce the risk of data breaches. An unlocked device can quickly expose personal data, confidential documents or emails, and may allow an outsider to access systems they would not normally have permission to use.
Always lock your computer, even if you step away only for a moment.
You can lock it quickly using the keyboard shortcut: Windows + L (Mac: Control + Command + Q)
Be cautious with phishing messages
Phishing remains the most common starting point for data breaches and one of the primary ways attackers attempt to obtain login credentials. It is also among the most frequent causes of data leaks.
Phishing messages can sometimes be difficult to identify, but they often share familiar patterns. They typically use a sense of urgency or a threatening tone to prompt quick action without proper consideration. Messages may also appear to come from trusted sources—such as a bank, government agency, or organizational leader—to make them seem credible.
If you have any doubts about a message or something feels unusual, do not click links or open attachments. Instead, verify the message by contacting the sender through official channels rather than replying directly.
Take a moment to pause and think before acting.
About password managers
ICT Services is often asked whether Jamk uses a centralized or recommended password management application. At the moment, no dedicated tool is in use, as most Jamk services rely on single sign‑on (SSO) and use the same Jamk credentials.
That said, password managers can still be very useful in everyday work. More information about password managers is available on the website of the Finnish National Cyber Security Centre (see link below).
If your job requires using multiple services with separate passwords, feel free to contact Jamk Helpdesk. Together we can find a practical and secure solution for managing your passwords!
