AI for Students
Generative AI can be a valuable partner in studies. It offers quick help with information searches, brainstorming, and even organizing learning materials. AI can help deepen your understanding of complex topics, generate new perspectives, and support your time management. However, it is important to use AI responsibly and critically. AI is not infallible and does not always understand context perfectly. Always verify the information provided by AI to ensure it is reliable and suitable for your purpose. AI does not replace your own learning process – use it as a support tool, but remember that independent thinking and applying knowledge are essential skills for growing expertise.
AI does not replace your own thinking. Remember, it is just one tool among others. Use AI as an aid, but ensure that you do the actual thinking and learning work yourself.
The use of AI significantly increases energy consumption, as the background processes of AI require many servers to operate. Use AI only as needed.
Using Microsoft Copilot
Use Microsoft Copilot chatbot in your studies, which you can access by logging in with your Jamk student credentials. When you use Copilot logged in with Jamk credentials, security and privacy are significantly better than in free versions of AI chats (e.g., Chat GPT, Gemini, or the free version of Copilot).

In group work, project planning, or creative writing, finding a new idea can be challenging. AI can act as a brainstorming partner in such situations.
Start a conversation with the chatbot by describing the situation for which you need ideas. The more detailed your description, the better the responses you will get. It’s advisable to ask for, for example, 20 ideas rather than just three, so you have options on which direction to take your brainstorming.
Example 1:
Can you provide 15 different perspectives on the impacts of climate change on the tourism industry? You can then ask for more ideas or select a few and continue the discussion based on them.
AI can be a great help in outlining the structure or main points of a text or presentation. However, remember to check how your teacher has instructed the use of AI in the learning task.
If the use of AI is allowed, ask AI for suggestions on structuring the introduction, main discussion, and conclusions. Note that the output from AI is a suggestion or example for the structure. Review it critically and consider if anything essential is missing in relation to your own perspective or the assignment instructions.
Sometimes, studying just doesn’t go well, and the enthusiasm for learning is lost. You can ask AI for tips on how to get started or what the next steps should be. For example, if you are facing a large task and don’t know where to begin, AI can help break the task into smaller parts and set intermediate goals.
Example 1:
How can I break down a 20-page report to make it easier to start?
Example 2:
We are having difficulty working together on a group project, especially with internal communication within the group. How can we move forward?
If you are going through a stressful period, you can ask AI for tips on relaxation and stress management. AI can help you create a balanced daily routine that includes sufficient sleep, nutrition, breaks, and leisure time.
Sometimes learning material or an assignment can be difficult to understand, and you need help comprehending it.
Start a conversation by asking AI to explain the topic or a specific concept in simple terms.
Example 1:
Can you explain what resilience means in a way that a 15-year-old would understand?
If an abstract concept like resilience seems difficult, you can ask AI to provide concrete examples of its application in everyday life. Copilot offers sources to help you delve deeper into the topic and ready-made questions to continue the discussion.
Planning studies and managing time can be challenging, especially when there are many tasks and deadlines. AI can act as a virtual assistant.
AI can also help you break down your work into smaller parts. Ask AI for help with different study strategies and choose the ones that suit you best. You can ask AI to help prioritize tasks.
Example 1:
Could you help me create a weekly plan where I have time to write an essay and prepare for an exam? The essay is due in three weeks, and the exam is in two weeks. I work three days a week for seven hours each time alongside my studies. Include exercise and eight hours of sleep in the plan. What study strategies would you suggest?
With AI, you can find accurate or seemingly accurate information, but also incorrect and false answers. The response provided by AI is based on the data it has been trained on. This training data does not include research and scientific material behind paywalls, for example. AI sometimes produces biased and incorrect content. Even if the content generated by AI is true, recognize what AI does not tell you.
Remember to be critical and always verify AI’s output from other sources. With Jamk credentials, you have access to Janet Finna’s publications and articles. Do not copy any content generated by AI into your own graded assignment, as it is considered cheating, which has zero tolerance at Jamk.
Sometimes it is difficult to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own work. AI can help by providing concrete and constructive feedback to improve your actions or tasks.
Example 1:
I had a difficult customer service situation where the customer didn’t want to listen to what I had to say. How can I handle such situations next time?
Example 2:
How can I improve my study techniques to remember things better?
Example 3:
Can you evaluate if my argument is convincing enough and how I could strengthen it?
Example 4:
Could I approach this topic from another perspective, such as sustainable development?
AI can assist in exam preparation. You can ask AI to create questions related to the exam topic or discuss the topic with it. Also, ask for help in scheduling your exam preparation.
Example 1:
Create five practice questions on [insert exam topic]. Think about your own answers. Then ask AI for answers to the practice questions. Evaluate AI’s answers in relation to your own answers and the course material.
Example 2:
You are an expert in the field of [insert exam topic]. Ask me three questions, from which I will choose one. Then ask me a follow-up question based on my answer.
