Video as a learning assignment

During your studies, you will receive learning assignments where the your task is to produce material in video format instead of a written report or reflection. There are a number of different platforms and options available for making, editing and sharing a video assignment.

You can use, for example, a webcam or a mobile device to record a video. As a Jamk student, you can borrow audio-visual devices, such as a video camera, from the main campus (Rajakatu 35, Jyväskylä) when necessary. These devices can be found from the Logger boxes near the info desk. You can borrow them by using, for example, your library card barcode. Instructions for activating your card can be found at the Logger borrowing point.

For further information about the devices available for borrowing at Logger, contact the ICT Helpdesk.

PowerPoint audio attachments

You can make use of the PowerPoint audio attachment feature if your online learning assignment requires an oral presentation in addition to a slideshow. Slides without an explanation are not always readily understandable to the reader as desired, but adding audio to the slides changes the situation.

Screencasts or video screen captures

Screen captures expand the options for producing learning assignments. You can create such a video in Zoom, PowerPoint (Insert > Screen Recording) or use the freeware software available on the Internet.

How to add audio in your PowerPoint presentation?

Examples of screencast softwares (not supported by Jamk):
Screencast-o-matic
Icecream Screen Recorder
FlashBack Express

Tip! Make a screencast if you need to explain a tricky problem to a fellow student or your teacher.

Editing a video

A video may sometimes be in need of some editing. The most common needs pertain to the use of headlines and cutting off unnecessary parts. Freeware software provides a solution to this problem.

Examples of editing software:

Video Editor (Win 10) or iMovie (OS) – the editor that comes with the operating system.
OpenShot – a bit like the old Windows Movie Maker.
DaVinci Resolve – more effects and features, so requires a little more effort from the user, as well as additional capacity from the computer.

Publishing and sharing a video

Panopto has been introduced early in the year 2020 at Jamk. Students can return video-learning tasks to a location specified by the teacher and learn with the help of videos that are shared in Panopto.

Stream is one of the applications available in Jamk’s O365 environment. With Stream, you can share videos with teachers and your fellow students. If Stream does not appear in the O365 application list, click ‘Discover all applications’ on the home page or ‘All applications’ in the shortcut menu at the top left corner.

Uploading and sharing a video in Stream: instruction in the form of a video and text.

In most cases, you can also upload your video to video services such as Youtube or Vimeo if you are familiar with their use. For example, Youtube provides the option of uploading videos in such a way that the video will not be included in public searches (‘Unlisted’, only those who know the link will have access to the video). This functionality is often utilized in learning assignments that are public but only intended to be seen by a more limited audience.

Instructions for using Youtube

User instructions for Vimeo. Vimeo instructions also include a useful Video School that provides tips for video production – irrespective of the publishing platform.

Nb! When installing applications or using any online services, be sure to take their rules of usage into account. We primarily prefer the use of applications supported by JAMK.
