Joining a meeting
You can join a Zoom meeting using the computer app, mobile app, or a computer browser. Below you can find instructions for all three methods.
We recommend using the Zoom app on your computer. You can download the Zoom application from the Zoom Download Center.
Prepare for the Zoom meeting and join using the Zoom app on your computer.
1. Prepare in advance.
- Choose a quiet space for the online meeting where you can focus and comfortably use your microphone and camera. Ensure proper lighting so that you appear clearly on camera when light comes from the front.
- Always try to join Zoom meetings on a computer, whether you are the host or a participant. Download and install the Zoom app from the Download Center.
- You can practice joining a Zoom meeting in the Zoom test meeting that is always open.
2. Make sure you have received the Zoom meeting link.
- Teachers often add the Zoom link for the course meetings to Moodle. The Zoom meeting link can also be sent via Outlook calendar invites or email.
- Click the link or copy the link text into the browser address bar.
- The browser may suggest opening the meeting in the Zoom app OR prompt you to download and install the Zoom app if you have not already done so. Accept the download and installation, as some meeting features are not available without the app. The download and installation process is quick.
- While it is not mandatory to sign in to Zoom to join a meeting, signing in with SSO using your Jamk credentials gives you access to Jamk Zoom.
3. Familiarize yourself with basic meeting functions.
- Waiting Room: In some Zoom meetings, a waiting room has been activated. The host admits you to the actual meeting room. Wait patiently until the host allows you into the meeting.
- Test Speaker and Microphone: Once in the Zoom meeting, click on the Test Speaker and Microphone link and complete the audio test. Follow the instructions on the screen to test speaker and microphone functionality. Finally, click Join with Computer Audio. It’s advisable to complete the audio test at the beginning of each meeting.
- Microphone: When the microphone icon has a red bar over it, your microphone is muted, and other meeting participants cannot hear you. Clicking the microphone icon removes the red bar, allowing others to hear your voice. Preferably, use a headset microphone for a more pleasant experience for yourself and others.
- Video Camera: When the video camera icon has a red bar over it, other meeting participants cannot see your video feed. Clicking the video camera icon removes the red bar, allowing others to see your video feed. You can click the arrow next to the camera icon to switch cameras and adjust other video settings. You can also activate background images, background blur, or even an avatar to replace your video feed. If you are signed in to Zoom with Jamk credentials, you can add a profile picture that will be visible when your video camera is off.
- Speaker view/Gallery view: You can view other meeting participants’ video feeds in either Speaker view or Gallery view. You can switch views by clicking the View button in the top right-hand corner of the video window.
If you want to join a Zoom meeting on a mobile device:
A mobile device is a good alternative if you have difficulty joining a Zoom meeting on a computer. Teachers may also want to join a Zoom meeting on a mobile device to view the meeting from a participant’s perspective.
The mobile app provides almost the same features as when participating on a computer.
1. Download the Zoom app to your mobile device.
- Download the ZOOM Cloud Meetings app from your device app store.
- You can sign in with Jamk credentials by selecting Sign in with SSO/Continue with SSO/SSO.
- If you plan to join a Zoom meeting as a teacher on both your laptop and mobile device, log in with your Jamk credentials only to the Zoom app on your laptop.
2. Join the Zoom meeting.
- Tap the Zoom meeting link that you have received via email or found in Moodle. Tapping the link will open the Zoom app on your mobile device, allowing you to join the meeting.
- Alternatively, you can copy the numeric sequence at the end of the Zoom link, enter it in the app’s code field, and join the meeting using the code.
3. Activate microphone and speaker when the meeting opens.
- If necessary, click Join Audio.
- Choose Wifi or Cellular Data.
4. Check your name after joining the meeting.
- If you haven’t signed in to the Zoom app, your name on a mobile device may appear as a numeric sequence or something related to your device’s operating system or model (e.g., iPhone John or Samsung 123).
- You can change your name by clicking the Participants button and then the Rename button next to your name.
- If you cannot update your name yourself, ask the meeting organizer to edit your name to the format First Name Last Name.
If you want to join a Zoom meeting using a browser:
If you need to use a browser for some reason, we recommend using Chrome. Other options are Firefox or Edge. We do not recommend Safari or Internet Explorer.
- Click the Zoom meeting link. Zoom will suggest either downloading the app or opening the meeting in the app. Look for the Join from Your Browser link on the screen and click it.
- Follow the instructions on your screen. Grant permission if the browser asks to use your microphone and camera.
- Note that when joining through the browser, certain features like annotation (making notes on a shared screen) is not possible.
