Creating a password

When you create a password, make sure you follow these guidelines:

  • Length: The password must be at least 14 characters or more
  • Complexity: Use combination of uppercase and lowercase letters between A-Z and numbers between 0-9 and special characters or symbols
  • Uniqueness: Do not use your personal data such as your name, birthdate, username, or phone number or even parts of them
  • Variety: Combine unrelated words to create a passphrase. Good password is easily remembered but difficult to guess.
  • Avoidance: Avoid using words that can be found in a dictionary.

The best place to keep your password is to keep it in your own memory. Do not save the password in an unprotected text file on your computer. From there, it can be easily sniffed by malware or hacking programs. If you must write down your password, keep it in a secure location. It is recommended to change your password regularly.

Never share your password with anyone, including friends or family members. The transfer of a Jamk (Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences) data-system username/password combination to another person is a violation of the user regulations.
