Teacher’s Moodle tips

Save time and clicks on Moodle.

  1. Click your own profile picture and choose Preferences.
  2. Choose Forum preferences.
  3. Change the setting Forum tracking to Yes: highlight new posts for me and save the changes.

Now, you can see how many unread posts there are on different forums on all your Moodle courses.

When grading a forum, you can choose either Whole forum grading or Ratings.

Whole forum grading

The teacher

  1. Can view student posts in one view and add a grade.
  2. Cannot write feedback in that view but must go to gradebook view to add the feedback.
  3. Can write feedback to the forum through the Reply privately option by just ticking the box below the reply field. The private message is only visible to the particular student.

Ratings:

The teacher

  1. Can rate each forum post separately by choosing a grade or points from a drop-down menu.
  2. Can choose to count, for example, an average or sum of ratings.
  3. Can write feedback to the forum, for example, through the Reply privately option.

You do not need to copy the original quiz or add another quiz to the course but you utilize the User overrides option in the original quiz.

  1. Click the quiz activity name, click More and choose Overrides.
  2. Click Add user override.
  3. Choose the student and determine when this student’s quiz opens and closes, what kind of a time limit the quiz has, and how many attempts are allowed. If there is originally one attempt allowed for the quiz, and the student has already used it, select 2 to the Attempts allowed field. If the student has not attempted the quiz at all yet, the field can have number 1.
  4. Click Save and the student who has been given the override permission can complete the quiz even through the quiz is closed to the other students on the course.
  5. If you need to add several user overrides, click Save and enter another override.
  6. You can also create a separate group, for example, for students retaking the quiz, and add a user override for that entire group. This way, you don’t have to add each individual student one by one. Note that group information is visible, for example, on the participant list to other students, so it is important to name the group carefully for privacy protection.

You can allow your students to supplement their quiz answers or to complete the quiz in several attempts.

Completing the answers in a quiz activity that allows multiple attempts:

  1. Open Edit settings of the quiz.
  2. Open the Question behaviour.
  3. Click Show more…
  4. Choose Each attempt builds on the last? Yes.

You can scroll horizontally in Moodle: Shift + mouse scroll wheel.

Have you been in a situation where you need to manually mark an activity completed? Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to the course.
  2. Click Reports below the course name.
  3. On the page that opens, select Activity completion and you can mark the student’s activity completed.
