First steps on a Moodle course

  1. Add a new Moodle course in the Peppi system at https://peppi.jamk.fi
    • Select the course implementation that requires a new Moodle course template.
    • Choose Learning environments and click Add course to establish a connection between Peppi and Moodle.
    • When students are accepted to the course implementation in Peppi, they will automatically become participants in the Moodle course.
  2. Go to Moodle to edit the basic settings of the course.
    • Click Managing tools > Edit course settings.
    • Course category: Select your own school from the drop-down menu.
    • Course end date: Specify the date when course deletion from Moodle can begin. The course will be visible to students for 6 months after the end date. After this period, the teacher will receive an email notification about the course being moved to the Arkisto category, from where the teacher can restore the course for the next 4 months. After that, the teacher will receive an email notification about the course being moved to the Poistuvat category, from where the admin can restore the course for another 4 months.
    • Course summary: Copy a brief description from the course description if desired.
    • Course image: Add a course image (size 1920×600) that will be visible on both Moodle desktop and the top banner of the course. In the Verkko-opetus @ Jamk Teams group, you can find ready-made images that meet the size requirements.
    • Course format: Change the course format if needed.
  3. Start building your Moodle course that is structurally and pedagogically fluent.
    • Use the course templates Welcome and Learning outcomes, workload, and assessment from the Jamk Moodle Bank course. When you use these templates, your students can find the key information of the course in the same section of each course. In Moodle, search for the course “Jamk Moodle Bank” and join the course using the enrolment key “Moodlekuntoon!”
    • Pick the learning objectives from the course description and plan what your student does to learn and how you as the teacher support student learning.
    • Make the student learning path visible by adding content, assignments and interaction to Moodle.
    • If you can use contents from another Moodle course, use the Import function to bring the content to your new Moodle course. You can find the Import function by clicking More > Course reuse in the navigation below the course name.
    • If you received course content from a colleague, review the course building principles together from pedagogical, technical and student feedback perspectives.
    • Seek assistance from the E-learning designer at your school for pedagogical and technical questions.
  4. When a course is added from Peppi to Moodle, it is automatically hidden from students.
    • Once the course is ready for publication, click Managing tools > Show course.
