Remote exam

The aim of supervising remote exams is the equal treatment of students.

Participation in a remote exam can take place, for example:

  • By taking the exam independently using the Quiz activity on the Moodle course or by taking the exam on the Exam application as a “BYOD exam”. The teacher can limit the time for completion or the exam can be taken at a certain time.
  • You can choose to take the exam at a specific time, e.g. by using the Zoom application. In the online meeting application, the exam is taken in a breakout room where a screen, audio and/or video is shared.

There are many ways to organise a remote exam. Here are common guidelines and best practices for organising and participating in a remote exam.

Instructions for the remote exam organiser:

  1. Explain clearly how the exam is to be taken; where, when and how.
    If possible, explain things like:
    • how the exam is to be taken,
    • whether it is a group exam,
    • the navigation method (can the student move freely between questions),
    • how the exam is supervised,
    • when to take the exam,
    • is the time for taking the test limited,
    • the materials and equipment required/allowed,
    • and the types of exam assignments.
  2. Ask the students to make sure the exam supervision platform, e.g. Zoom, works.
  3. Instruct the students on how they can ensure their privacy (for example, having an empty wall behind them or the possibility of using a virtual background image).
  4. Tell the students what to do and how to contact you if they experience issues after the exam has started or they cannot access the exam.
  5. Tell the students about the right to stop the supervision in exceptional circumstances, e.g. to turn off their camera, but that doing this may result in their exam being failed.
  6. The starting point is that students do not see each other’s video. Explain clearly if this is necessary due to the implementation method (e.g. group exam).
  7. The remote supervised exam must only be implemented using applications and systems approved by the ICT services of Jamk University of Applied Sciences.
  8. Do not make a recording of the exam; supervision must take place in real time.

In the case of a remote supervised exam, it should be noted that remote supervision cannot completely exclude the possibility of fraud or attempts at fraud. In remote supervision, pay attention to the protection of privacy. In a remote supervised exam, it may be necessary to verify the identity e.g. with a passport or a photo ID card, if it cannot be verified by means of electronic identification or system login.

To prevent identity theft, the ID should be displayed only to the examiner alone in the Breakout room.

The alternative ways to participate in a supervised remote exam are:

  • Electronic exam on the Rajakatu campus or in higher education institutions that allow Exam Visits
  • Supervised exam on campus
  • Other alternative method of completion presented by the teacher
