Thesis supervisor’s badge

Thesis supervision is a special skill and a key part of student supervision at Jamk. The quality of supervision largely determines the student’s experience of the thesis process. Hence, it is important to develop thesis supervision skills and make them visible throughout Jamk. The aim is that every student receives equally high-quality supervision for their thesis.

The aim is to improve the quality of the supervision, for example, with this thesis supervisor’s badge.  The badge is a digital certificate of competence that tells what you have learned and how you have demonstrated it. 
With the badge, you can:

• develop your skills as a thesis supervisor and show that you are qualified for it.
• Identify your own strengths and weaknesses as a thesis supervisor. This enables the right kind of training and support for the thesis supervisors.
• Increase the level and visibility of Jamk’s supervision competence, ensure its equality, and strengthen the profile of thesis supervisors.
• Raise managers’ appreciation for thesis supervision. As a result, motivated and suitable faculty are recruited for the thesis supervision and sufficient working hours can be ensured for this work.

Objectives of the badge

• You know the ways of interaction and guidance styles
• You recognize various problems related to the progress of the thesis
• You are familiar with development and research methods and Jamk’s requirements for the research-based nature of theses
• You are able to act as a supervisor ethically and responsibly
• You master the phases of Jamk’s thesis process
• You are familiar with the systems related to the thesis, such as Wihi, Turnitin and Exam, and you are able to instruct students in their use
• You are able to utilise and apply Jamk’s instructions in thesis supervision

Enroll yourself for the badge in the OSS-system (oss.jamk.fi) , so that your manager is aware of your plan and you get the link to the Moodle-workspace.
Make sure, that the badge hours (10h) is marked to your work plan (TAS).

If you don’t yet have theses to supervise, you can make the badge partially. The badges are granted once in a semester. See the detailed instructions from the Moodle workspace.
