10.8 Thesis assessment and assessment form
Approval of thesis 3/3 phase is completed by assessing the thesis.
The thesis assessment decision is made by the thesis principal tutor and the 2nd examiner together. The principal thesis tutor and the 2nd examiner do their own numerical assessment in the Wihi assessment form, discuss the grade of the thesis and prepare a joint assessment statement about the thesis. Finally, the thesis tutor still approves the assessment. These steps are described in more detail below. Below the page in the documents you will also find a process description of the assessment phase.
If the principal thesis tutor and the 2nd examiner cannot come to a unanimous assessment decision, the assessment decision is transferred to the Bachelor’s thesis work group of each unit or to Jamk’s joint Master’s thesis work group.
Set the 2nd examiner of the thesis
You assign an examiner for the thesis once the student has completed the first version of the thesis it its entirety. Both the principal thesis tutor and the coordinator can do this by clicking on Change advisors and examiners button and adding a person’s name for a project by clicking Add button (Figure 1). See more detailed settings of rights in the coordinator’s instructions on the Editing tutors (= advisors in Wihi) and examiners page.
After the examiner logged into Wihi, he will see links on the front page to those theses whose inspection is current. The examiner can find all the jobs he/she wants to check through the Theses pending evaluation menu. The examiner completes a preliminary examination of the thesis and gives feedback on it to the student by e-mail or in a manner otherwise agreed. Finally, the examiner assesses the thesis. After that the principal thesis tutor provides their own assessment.
Thesis assessment
The assessment can be accepted as final only after
- the student has returned his/her thesis to the Plagiarism Check field in Wihi.
- the tutor has approved the plagiarism analysis.
- the 2nd examiner has assessed the thesis.
- the student has passed his/her maturity test.
Clicking on Evaluate thesis button takes you to the assessment form that you need to complete.
The assessment criteria for the thesis can be found on Wihi assessment form, where each point is assessed separately. Additionally, the principal thesis tutor and the examiner prepare a joint assessment statement on the thesis project (Figure 2). The analysis percentage from the Turnitin report is also entered into the Evaluation statement field. After these, you have accepted the assessment clicking Accept button on the evaluation form. Approving the assessment also accepts the thesis 3/3 phase in Wihi.
If you are unable to complete the assessment in one session, it can be saved as a draft version. The thesis coordinator can only remove an approved assessment once.
The effects of the assessment form on Peppi
When the project has completed, from the assessment form, will be transferred to Peppi and to the degree certification:
- the thesis name in Finnish and English (in English-language theses, the name is written in English in both fields).
- the overall grade of the thesis and assessments for the courses of all thesis phases.
- the study attainment of the maturity test (approved)
- is transferred from the section of the assessment form ‘Language in which maturity examination was passed’ (Figure 3).
It is important that this information has been checked with the assessment form before the final accept of the assessment!
Maturity test and assessment form in case the student is exempt from the maturity test
Direct the student to apply for an exemption from the maturity test at the eAHOT service in Peppi no later than when the thesis is to be assessed. The application is sent to the principal thesis tutor. See instructions: Student’s instruction on applying for an exemption (Help) and Thesis tutor’s instruction on processing the application (Help).
In Wihi, the maturity test information on the assessment form are mandatory fields. Enter the information in the fields. The date of completion of the maturity test must be set to an ‘fictitious’ date and the evaluator of the maturity test can be, for example, the principal thesis tutor.
There is a section at the bottom of the the assessment form where you can skip the transfer of study attainments to Peppi. On the assessment form, click the “Skip accomplishment creation to student register” button (Figure 4). The function may not be used anywhere else except on the assessment form for those students who do not take the maturity test and have applied for an exemption from it.
The study attainment of the maturity test is not transferred to Peppi. In addition to this, the study attainment will not be transferred to the courses of “Bachelor’s Thesis, Reporting and Assessment” or “Master’s Thesis, Reporting”. The latter issue is corrected at the point when the principal thesis tutor ends the project by archiving the work. At this stage, the study attainments of all study courses and the thesis are transferred to Peppi.
